Chapter 16.
Roland almost dropped his rifle and then raised it again quickly. There was no way they could combat the tank. It fired destroying the small building behind the junction. The remains of the building rained down on them as Murden shouted to retreat at the top of her lungs. The team behind him dispersed as Roland watched and waited. Lawry and Clark hadnât returned. What the hell were they doing?
âWebb, what are they doing down there?â
Webb leaned out into the centre of the ditch. âI donât know. I canât see them.â
Crap Roland thought. They were going to get themselves killed. Roland quickly checked around the tank with his rifle. The enemy infantry was inched forward to give support. If he wasnât able to take out the tank, at least he could hit the support. He fired and then fired again. The tank rumbled towards him as he fired shot after shot trying to take as many of the enemy down before he had to retreat. A whining sound filled his ears making him look up. The turret was traversing. It was aiming at him.
He grabbed Webbâs back and yanked him up and out of the trench into a bush. Roland rolled up after him and squashed both of them flat. Milliseconds later the tree they had been behind exploded in wooden shrapnel. Roland felt the splinters rattle off of his helmet and looked up.
âNow while they are reloadingâ He shouted in Webbâs ear grabbing him up and shoving him back towards the buildings. Roland didnât follow him though. He ran out into the long grass of the field crouching low. As he made his way forward along the hedge line, he stopped and checked the field seeing a squad of the enemy making their way through the hedge. He switched to burst fire and unloaded into them. Roland smiled as they scrambled back pulling at their dead comrades. He looked through the hedge and finally spotted Lawry and Clark. They were laid flat against the side of the ditch waiting. There was something bulky in their hands but their bodies obscured it. He dropped low and waited as the tank reached them.
They nodded to each other and then threw whatever they were holding. As soon as they had done, so they ducked down and ran along the ditch. Roland saw two enemies raise their rifles at them and fired taking them out before starting to run himself. He made it only a few metres until a shock-wave hit him and knocked him down. His ears were ringing as his drug himself up and ran towards the buildings. Covering fire was starting to rain down on the enemy in the road. Rolandâs hearing came back with a pop as the crack of the rifles reverberated around him. As he dove through the hedge he found Lawry and Clark on the other side. Lawry grabbed him up pulling him with them before running around the house in front of them. They didnât stop until they had reached the building the LT was using.
